The Lady in our Logo

Where did she come from? Who is her family? Who are her descendants? We really don't know. This photo was found in a Los Angeles thrift store at Crenshaw and Washington over 18 years ago. Her eyes and her face speak volumes. There is an almost underlying sadness about what we can imagine of her status and the trials and triumphs that were her life experience. The mystery surrounding her is fascinating. There are probably photos like this that have ended up in thrift stores or tucked away in an old dresser, closet or attic waiting to be discovered.

For us it is the mystery that surrounds her that matches the mysteries and unexplained dead end challenges of African American genealogy. She represents our search for answers to broken families, hopes and untold stories; searching for answers that may or may not be resolved. This lady evokes a myriad of feelings. Just like we found her, we find others. Slowly but surely the mysteries surrounding our families and ascendants comes together...

This site is dedicated to my uncle, Chauncey  who told me about Emma Fletcher and Arthur Harris and about life in little Washington.  On my last visit with him, Chauncey gave me a box full of pictures to finish our family history.  I am glad that he got to see the first edition of  "The Broadest Branches"  I am also glad that I was able to fulfill a wish for him in that I was able to find out more about his father, Amon. He was very grateful for the opportunity for us to get together and visit and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life...
